The Microtonal Classical Guitar KG is our entry-level professional microtonal instrument — designed in collaboration with renowned microtonal musicians for players ready to commit to one specific alternative tuning system without the cost of an adjustable-fret build.
Why fixed-fret microtonal makes sense at this price
Custom-fretted microtonal guitars from boutique European luthiers start around $3,500. The KG delivers conservatory-grade build quality (solid spruce top, rosewood back and sides, multi-laminate neck) at $799 because we standardize on the most common Turkish 24-tone equal temperament fretting. You get a real microtonal instrument — not a modified standard guitar — without the custom-build premium.
Best for
- Conservatory students enrolled in Turkish or Arabic music programs
- Self-taught players who have decided on Turkish makam as their primary system
- Composers writing in 24-tone equal temperament
- Anyone outgrowing a beginner-level instrument and needing a stable professional setup
- Players who prefer the acoustic projection of a solid-top classical guitar (no pickup)
Not best for
- Multi-system performers (the CK-5's adjustable frets give you flexibility for $2,200 more)
- Live performers needing amplification — the KG-5 adds an EQ pickup at $1,499
- Total beginners — start with the KG-2 ($599) to test commitment first

FAQ
What tuning system does the KG ship with?
Turkish 24-tone equal temperament — the standard for makam music. This includes the standard Western chromatic notes plus the koma and bakiye intervals needed for Hicaz, Saba, Uşşak, and other Turkish makams.
Can I play standard Western music on it?
Yes — the standard 12-tone notes are all present. The additional microtonal frets sit between them and don't interfere with conventional playing.
Is the body the same as the more expensive CK-5?
The body shape and tonewoods are the same family (spruce top, rosewood back/sides). The CK-5 adds an upgraded cutaway, armrest, and the adjustable fret mechanism — the KG is the pure acoustic-projection version.
